چکیده

A trauma or congenital pathology may seriously compromise the performance of upper limbs from an operative standpoint and informally, tluough sensitivity. These special aspects show how difficult it is to develop an artificial limb capable to reply important functions, such as for example: eating, independence in the batluoom and so on In order to carry out a good treatment with orthopaedic devices, it is necessary to define specific and closely-aimed rehabilitation programs that are personalized and differentiated in relation to the case to be treated First of all, it will be necessary to make specific psycho-physical evaluations regarding mobility, function, muscular potential (when applying myoelectric-controlled upper limb prostheses), motivations, learning capacity of the subject in question and anything else necessary in order to define the correct protocol to be adopted (Special attention must be paid when treating children, which requires full involvement and conviction by the parents)

Evidence Note Differences in Myoelectric and Body-Powered Upper Limb Prostheses

Key Points  Research comparing upper limb prostheses is limited.  Body-powered prostheses have demonstrated advantages in durability, training time, user feedback and frequency of adjustment and maintenance.  Myoelectric prostheses have been shown to provide a cosmetic advantage, are more accepted for light intensity work, and may positively affect phantom limb pain when used actively.  Bod...

Electromyography Pattern-Recognition-Based Control of Powered Multifunctional Upper-Limb Prostheses

The human history has been accompanied by accidental trauma, war, and congenital anomalies. Consequently, amputation and deformity have been dealt with, one way or another, throughout the ages. More than one million individuals in the United States today are living with limb amputations (Adams et al., 1999), in which there are approximately 100,000 patients with an upper limb amputation. The wa...

Neural machine interfaces for controlling multifunctional powered upper-limb prostheses.

This article investigates various neural machine interfaces for voluntary control of externally powered upper-limb prostheses. Epidemiology of upper limb amputation, as well as prescription and follow-up studies of externally powered upper-limb prostheses are discussed. The use of electromyographic interfaces and peripheral nerve interfaces for prosthetic control, as well as brain machine inter...
